According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the foreign ministers of Russia and Iran are set to engage in detailed discussions on their bilateral relations, which have now officially evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Iran for a working visit, with his plane landing at Tehran's airport.

Before this visit, Lavrov was in Turkey, where he held talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Russian Foreign Ministry highlights that the key focus of the upcoming talks will be enhancing trade and economic cooperation, particularly in energy and transportation sectors, through the implementation of major joint projects. Additionally, the ministers will discuss a variety of international issues, such as the situation in Syria, the South Caucasus, Afghanistan, Yemen, the Persian Gulf, the Middle East crisis, Caspian Sea concerns, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action concerning Iran’s nuclear program.

Lavrov’s last visit to Tehran was in October 2023, where he participated in a 3+3 platform meeting on the South Caucasus.

The Russian Foreign Ministry notes that the political dialogue between Moscow and Tehran is grounded in their shared or aligned positions on numerous regional and global matters.

President Vladimir Putin has emphasized the importance of strengthening friendly relations with Iran, which are based on equality, mutual respect, and cooperation. He remarked that the growing partnership has been continuously progressing. Iranian official Masoud Pezeshkian also highlighted Russia's key role in Iran’s policy of good-neighborliness and acknowledged the increasing exchanges of delegations between the two countries.

On January 17, Russia and Iran signed the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation, solidifying their commitment to deepening ties.
